Each year, the Fraser Institute publishes annual rankings for 718 Secondary Schools in Ontario. The rankings are based in part on the results of Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) testing.
The province wide EQAO testing evaluates proficiency in both English and Mathematics and covers Mathematics in Grade 9 and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test in Grade 10.
While the Fraser Institute rankings can have an effect on property values located within the school boundaries of the top schools, they should be considered as one of many factors in selecting a school. You should also contact the school board and speak directly with the school’s principal to gain a fuller understanding of what the school has to offer in the way of student life, arts and character development. While private schools are not required to administer the EQAO tests, the ones that have are included in the Fraser Institute rankings.
Markham placed eight schools in the provinces top 100 Secondary Schools with three of these placing in the top 11 schools in the province – Pierre Elliott Trudeau (#4), St. Augustine (#11), Unionville (#11), Bur Oak (#15), Bill Crothers (#43), Middlefield (#58), Markham District (#58) and Markville (#84).
