This February, the Fraser Institute published its annual rankings for 2,714 Elementary Schools in Ontario. The rankings are based in part on the results of Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) testing.
The province wide EQAO testing evaluates proficiency in both English and Mathematics in Grades 3 and 6. French Immersion students receive English testing beginning in Grade 6.
While the Fraser Institute rankings can have an effect on property values located within the school boundaries of the top schools, they should be considered as one of many factors in selecting a school. You should also contact the school board and speak directly with the school’s principal to gain a fuller understanding of what the school has to offer in the way of student life, arts and character development. While private schools are not required to administer the EQAO tests, the ones that have are included in the Fraser Institute rankings.
This year, the Fraser Institute has elected to exclude the French Immersion elementary schools in Markham.
For example of the 2714 Elementary Schools, Markham is home to ten schools that rank in the top 5% - St. Justin Martyr (#1), William Berczy (#1), Stonebridge (#25), Castlemore (#57), John McCrae (#57), Buttonville (#67), San Lorenzo Ruiz (#67), Coledale (#78), Sainte-Marguerite-Bourgeoys (#88), and St. Benedict (#124).
The scoring for these schools was very close. The separation between first (10.0) and 124th place (8.7) was very small. The important thing to note is that these ten Elementary Schools are located in the City of Markham.
