This April, the Fraser Institute published its 2013/2014 annual rankings for 749 Secondary Schools in Ontario. The rankings are based in part on the results of Education Quality and Accountability Office testing.
The province wide EQAO testing evaluates proficiency in both English and Mathematics and covers Mathematics in Grade 9 and the Ontario Secondary School Literacy Test in Grade 10.
While the Fraser Institute rankings can have an effect on property values located within the school boundaries of the top schools, they should be considered as one of many factors in selecting a school. You should also contact the school board and speak directly with the school’s principal to gain a fuller understanding of what the school has to offer in the way of student life, arts and character development. While private schools are not required to administer the EQAO tests, the ones that have are included in the Fraser Institute rankings. The overall 2013/2014 provincial average rating was 6.0.
Markham placed 11 schools in the top 100 Secondary Schools in the 2013/2014 evaluation period.
Markville (#4), Unionville High School (#9), Pierre Elliott Trudeau (#9), Bur Oak (#9), St. Augustine (#22), Westmount (#22), St. Robert (#29), Middlefield (#29), Bill Crothers (#53), St. Elizabeth (#66) and Vaughan (#72). The average score difference between the #1 school (10.0) and the #72 school (7.9) is 2.1.
The remaining 7 Markham Secondary Schools placed well above the provincial average of 6.0.
Thornhill (#119), Markham (#119), Stephen Lewis (#119), Thornlea (#119), Milliken Mills (#136), Father Michael McGivney (#198) and St. Brother André (#215). The average score difference between #119 (7.6) and the #215 (7.0) is 0.6.
It is important to keep the annual rankings in context. A lower score in a single year may be due to a number of factors. The rankings for the past five years will tend to even out the annual fluctuations.
Over the past five years, Markham has been home to 13 schools that ranked in the top 100 Secondary Schools in the province.
