Explore Barrie on Foot
My wife Patty and I like to frequent the north shore of Kempenfelt Bay, specifically the old rail trail. Converted to a graveled walking and bike path several years ago by the City of Barrie, the old rail trail offers a scenic and tranquil escape from the bustling city, winding along the edge of Kempenfelt Bay from the foot of Mulcaster St. to just east of Johnson St. Typically we park at the foot of Johnson St. in the parking lot there and head west towards downtown, but recently we decided to go east in an attempt to discover the point where the trail ends. We were delighted to find this part of the trail affords a view of the marina (I am a bit of a sailophile) as well as the discovery of a quaint little cottage and 2 beautiful homes situated on the water side of the trail.
Normally the waterside of the trail consists of steep drops to the water with the occasional dock. These homes we had “discovered” however, were placed neatly between the water and the path as the old railway began it’s curve inland on it’s way to Oro Station. While unable to see the waterfront side of these properties, we imagined something special.
It was only later, when Patty and I took a tour of the bay on the Serendipity Princess, the local tour boat, that we were able to see the waterside of these properties. Wow! Special is an understatement! In our busy automobile centred lives, we sometimes miss the reasons why so many people make Barrie their home. We have discovered many enriching sights during our strolls so I encourage you to take a walk yourself and discover a whole new Barrie. You will be glad you did!
