A Brief History of Wonders of Winter (From www.wondersofwinter.ca)
"WONDERS OF WINTER was started in 1994 by Bill Weiler with a loan from the City of Waterloo for the installation of the first underground electrical services and 5000 lights.
The loan has now been repaid and eleven service clubs, plus a crew of sponsors and volunteers, provide the financing and staffing for each year’s festival. In addition, a team of retired electrical workers - volunteers, all of them - build, install and maintain the underground services and displays. Approximately sixty corporations and businesses in the local community support the festival by sponsoring displays.
Today, we have over eighty displays, both static and animated, with a total of 100,000 lights. They range from Santa Claus, nursery rhymes, animals, cartoon characters, and many other surprises. There is also a unique nativity scene handcarved from olive wood. And the festival continues to change and grow, bringing joy to the community and the tens of thousands of people, young and old, who visit over the month of December."
