The City of Saskatoon (City) is pleased to announce the opening of the brand new Mayfair Outdoor Swimming Pool at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 10, 2012, in Saskatoon’s historic Caswell Hill neighbourhood, located west of Idylwyld Drive.
“Mayfair Pool is a place where our community can come together to participate in active living,” Leisure Services Branch Manager Cary Humphrey says. “The facility was designed with the community in mind, and will provide quality recreation, health, and fitness opportunities to all residents of Saskatoon.”
Mayfair Pool originally opened in July 1959. It was the oldest operating pool in Saskatoon until it reached the end of its life expectancy in 2008. Extensive feedback was gathered from general citizens, area residents and Community Associations. The process identified key program and facility amenities, which were used to produce the project Concept Plan - adopted by City Council on September 8, 2009.
“One of the City’s Strategic Goals – Quality of Life, directs spending toward amenities within neighbourhoods. These expenditures provide citizens with enhanced, complete communities that promote active living at facilities, which bring people together - the new Mayfair Pool does just that,” Humphrey says.
The exciting new facility will include an outdoor leisure pool with water features, a lane pool and diving area, a waterslide and run-out chute, as well as designated areas for sports activity, barbeque and picnic space. The cost of replacing the facility was approximately $5.5 million, funded entirely by the City.
Mayfair Pool will be hosting a celebration on Wednesday, August 15, 2012, from 11:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. to commemorate the grand reopening, as well as to celebrate Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee. The event will include free swimming, a free barbeque, cake, entertainment, activities, and a ribbon cutting ceremony.
