In an Iroquois story, a young man walking through the country came to the banks of a wide, wild river. He needed to get across it to continue his journey, but saw no way he could possibly reach the other bank safely.
As he walked along, looking for a safe route, he spotted an Iroquois Chief on the opposite bank. He called out, “Grandfather! How can I get to the other side of the river?”
The chief thought about this for a moment and called back, “My son, you’re already on the other side.”
So on this special day, which we celebrate the birth of a nation founded on freedom, respect for differences and social justice remember sometimes you are already where you want to be.
