As you may have heard, Montreal adopted a by-law regarding solid-fuel-burning appliances (ie. fireplaces) this summer. Owners of such appliances have until December 22, 2015 to declare the device (you can do so here). The use of a fireplace during smog warnings is now prohibited. As of October 1, 2018, those devices not recognized by the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) emitting less than 2.5g/hr of fine particles into the atmosphere are banned.
So what to do with your fireplace? There are many ways to style fireplaces without burning wood.
Storage (old chest, shelves)
Reading materials (stacks of books, magazines)
Sculptures and art
Candles (real or battery-powered)
