Elmwood

The oldest neighbourhood in this part of Winnipeg is Elmwood, with many of the homes in the Elmwood area and southern part of East Kildonan (around Larsen Avenue north, for example) are approaching 80 or more years old, with some close to 100 years old. The area known as Elmwood was the only part of the original City of Winnipeg. It is bordered by Munroe Ave  and Concordia Ave on the North, Panet Road on the East, Thomas and Tyne Avenues and the Canadian Pacific Railway mainline on the South, and the Red River on the west. This working class area recently received a Core Area Initiative funding to upgrade the area, leading to a rise in infill housing and townhomes. The area known as Elmwood was the only part of the original City of Winnipeg. Here you'll find a rich cultural and social diversity, a thriving local economy, well-kept homes and streets, and beautiful parks and green spaces.

Elmwood is mostly composed of single family detached residential homes of varying qualities. The number of single family detached homes in Elmwood are 8,000. Please see the Interactive Property Map for more information.

Elmwood is managed by two school divisions, the River East Transcona School Division and the Winnipeg School Division. In the River East School Division there consists of two schools which are both elementary schools. In the Winnipeg School Division there consists of six schools in total, five elementary schools, and one middle/high school. To learn more information about these schools click here. There are a number of small plazas along Henderson Highway in the west of the community, and along Nairn Ave on the southern edge. The area's mega-mall is Kildonan Place, just to the southeast.

The community has a wide range of recreational opportunities. There Several parks along the Red River, including Elmwood Park. Elmwood is home to five community centres;  Bronx Park Community CentreChalmers Community Centre, East Elmwood Community Centre, Kelvin Community Centre (managed by Bronx Park) and Morse Place Community Centre which all provide both indoor and outdoor recreational and leisure activities for all ages.
