Fort Rouge is located in the south-central part of the city, it is bounded on the north by the Assiniboine River, on the east and south by the Red River. This area was built around 1900, and has a population density double the city’s average. Fort Rouge includes neighbourhood's Crescentwood (see page), Lord Roberts (see page), Corydon Village, and Osborne Village.

Winnipeg School Division manages the Fort Rouge community which includes 9 schools. There are 7 elementary schools; Earl Grey School (N-8); Fort Rouge School (N-6); Gladstone School (N-6); Grosvenor School (N-6); Harrow School (N-6); Lord Roberts Community School (K-6); Rockwood School (N-6) and two high schools; Kelvin High School (9-12) Grant Park High School (7-12). There are also 3 private schools in Fort Rouge including St. Ignatius School (K-8), St Mary's Academy (7-12), and Westgate Mennonite Collegiate (7-12).

To the north, on the Assiniboine and Red River, you can ice skate in the wintertime. The neighbourhood is also home to the Winnipeg Winter Club and the Winnipeg Squash & Racquet Club. There are also many community centres which provide indoor and outdoor activities for all ages and a lot of beautiful parks to roam around and enjoy.

This area has abundant recreational opportunities. For the culturally minded, there is live theatre in Osborne Village, and many bars there have live bands. Grant Park has a movie theatre multiplex, and beside the mall is Grant Park, which is home to the Pan Am Pool and Athletic Grounds, as well as the Aquatic Hall of Fame Museum.
