The Hydrostone is a unique 10-block area of Halifax that rose from the ashes and devestation of the Halifax Explosion; one of the largest man-made explosions to ever occur.  The Hydrostone is the first planned neighbourhood in Canada; laid out by British Planner Thomas Adams, the buildings were designed by architect George Ross. The buildings are all variations of the same architectural theme and constructed with the unique “Hydro-Stone” concrete blocks.  Most of the dwellings are row-houses in groups of four and six, except for the large, two-storey single-family houses at the eastern end of each street.
