Planned hikes for the STM will also be reduced.
Mayor Michael Applebaum caused a schism in Union Montreal last month because he felt a tax increase beyond the rate of inflation could not be justified, especially in the wake of multiple admissions of corruption by city officials.
As a result Applebaum pushed for the average 3.3 percent property tax hike to be lowered by eliminating the 1.1 percent devoted to water taxes.
In addition, the proposed fare hikes for a monthly STM pass will go up, but not as much.
Come January 1, 2013 a monthly bus pass will cost $77, instead of the $77.75 that was announced in October.
The city of Montreal said it will be giving the STM an extra $5 million in order to achieve this.
