Spring ReFresh Ideas

I can’t tell you the immense satisfaction I get when I open my windows for the first time after a long, cold winter. It’s such a simple thing, yet the overwhelming feeling that summer is on its way is enough to put a smile on my face for the whole day. A thorough spring cleaning is a close second. It feels good to shake out the cobwebs and generally welcome some life back into our shuttered winter homes. While you're at it, try the following to refresh your home for spring.
Force Nature's Hand
Virginia MacDonald, Gemma Comas
Nothing says spring like some flowering branches. They embody spring and add drama to any room. Forcing branches is actually very easy. All you need is a flowering bush (find one in your backyard or your neighbour’s) -- forsythia, magnolia, apple blossom and cherry blossom all work well -- and carefully remove a few branches. Smash the ends of the stems with a hammer and place in room temperature water. In a few days, you will have beautiful blossoms gracing your home.
Brightly Hued Rugs and Pillows
It’s true that switching out your accessories is the easiest way to update your home for spring. Sometimes it’s making small changes like this that can have the biggest effect on a room. A small investment is some key pieces like this Peruvian inspired rug or acid hued pillows from Canadian designers Fluf will go a long way in brightening up your home.
House to Home, Anthropologie
If you’ve been hiding under a heavy blanket or flannel sheets all winter now is the time to switch out those burdensome bed linens. More often than not, your bed is the focal point in your bedroom so it can stand up to some bold treatment like these on-trend, large floral prints. The key is not to overdo it. Try mixing in some solid hued pillows or contrasting sheets to break up the large graphic patterns.
Another trend that is popular at the moment in both fashion and home decorating is colour blocking. It’s actually a really easy way to update your neutral space for spring. If you’re willing to spend a bit of money you could reupholster one or two of your favourite chairs in a bright, bold hue. However, if you’re looking for a more temporary solution try adding a few colourful throws, some solid coloured accessories or even some large scale plants to add punches or blocks of colour to your neutral space.
Paint Your Front Door
House of Turquoise, Small Shop Studio
My favourite kinds of transformations are ones that you can pull off in a weekend. Painting your front door both inside and out is an easy way to update your space and doesn’t take a lot of time or money. Go bold! Front doors are actually one of the places in your home you can release your inner colour fiend. Imagine how fresh your all-white hallway could look with a burst of spring hued paint...
