BEST PRACTICES FOR COTTAGE LIFE WITH THE MINISTRY OF NATURAL RESOURCES IN ONTARIO

BEST PRACTICES

/ Prune Trees: don't remove them.

/ Replace solid surfaces with porous material to absorb run off.

/ Leave grass 3 inches high so grass doesn't dry out.

/ Leave a vegetation buffer along the shoreline. Plant native trees/shrubs to reduce run off/erosion.

/ Don't armour your shoreline, use natural materials and vegetation for the erosion control.

/ Docking: use steel piles, or floating to minimize impact to the fish habitat.

/ Properly maintain your septic system.

/ Use biodegradable and natural cleaning products without phosphates of harsh chemicals.
