Invasive Mussels

Hard to believe but there appears to be little in the way of action by government on the issue of invasive mussels.  The Morning Star newspaper reports that the Okanagan Basin Water Board is trying to set up a meeting with Environment Minister Mary Polack so that there can be discussion about the need for inspection stations to ensure that boats entering our waters are not contaminated with quagga and zebra mussels.  Our beautiful mountains and lakes are what draw people to live and play in the Okanagan, surely one of the prettiest spots in the world.  If our lakes become contaminated with invasive mussels what kind of financial impact will this have on our local economy?  The Okanagan Basin Water Board, as reported in the Morning Star, estimates the cost of $43 million per year just to manage the problem.  Action needs to be taken sooner rather than later.
