Old Landfill To Have New Life
It was announced last week that the landfill which was located on Pottery Road is to be formally closed with the site to be turned into a park. The landfill ceased operations in the late 1980’s. The new park is projected to cost $1.8 million and is to include a bike skills park and a disc golf course. There currently is no disc golf course in the area with fans of the sport having to travel to Kelowna to get their fill of the sport.
The Morning Star newspaper reported that the park is one of five regional projects that are aimed at lowering green house gas emissions. Each of the projects is being funded out of federal gas tax funds.
Some other gas tax projects funded by the federal funds are:
- $1.9 million for the Greater Vernon Recycling and Disposal facility gas management system,
- $100,000 Eco Depot on Birnie Road,
- $100,000 to replace the old Enderby/Armstrong BC Transit bus,
- $250,000 for the Official Community Plan regional context statement
