Over the last year or so there have been so many stories in the news about falling glass from condo buildings, most notably in Toronto or Ottawa. After hearing about the new building code requirements for balcony glass, I did some research and found countless examples of this somewhat frightening phenomenon! In Toronto, the latest incidence was at a condo on Simcoe St, and less than a month ago on Bank St in Ottawa.
The new regulations stipulate that construction companies are required to:
- use heat-strengthened laminated glass when glass is close to the edge of a balcony
- use heat-strengthened laminated glass or heat-soaked tempered glass where balcony guards are inset from the edge of a balcony
These rules took effect July 1, 2012, however they do not apply to any construction already under way, or to retrofit buildings that already exist.
If you have more questions, check out the government's website, especially if you have concerns about your own glass balcony.
