People are really starting to invest in feeding their hobbies and interests as we all realize how important it is to find balance in increasingly hectic lives. What I think is really incredible is the new trend in sheds and how they are being used in really creative ways to give homeowners their little oasis away…without actually having to get away. Customizing a backyard shed into the space of your dreams is an economical solution that is much cheaper and easier than building an addition or moving to a larger house.
Here are my top 5 favourite new uses of “sheds”
1) “Man Cave” or “She Shed”
Admit it, we all have had moments where we could just get away from our significant other, the kids, the mess in the house, the chores….So why not have a little retreat right in your own back yard! This is the perfect space to let loose your inner decorator and go with those over the top fabrics or colours and textures you love since it’s a space only meant for you! If you’re really into all the flower prints or really dark colours that might be too much for the inside of the house, this is your chance to play with them. Creativity often does well in an environment specifically set up to inspire and facilitate your creative process. Whether you’re a painter, musician, writer, sculptor, photographer, it doesn’t really matter what art form(s) you play in, you can create a shed studio that will suit your needs to a tee. If you’re going to create a “music room” shed, keep in mind you will likely need to add some sound-proofing so your neighbours don’t end up hating you, but that’s pretty easily done.
This music room link also includes step by step instructions on soundproofing.
3) Shed Pubs
These little backyard hang outs are perfect for all seasons as you can keep the shed doors open in the Summer for a patio vibe or close them up and keep cozy and snug inside the shed in the colder months. Shed parties aren’t just for the East Coast anymore! And the extra bonus is if you don’t feel like cleaning up right away the next morning, you can just close the doors and go into your still clean house and deal with the contained mess in the shed later. Here’s a great link to a bunch of cool shed pubs you should check out.
4) Play House Shed
Kids adore having their own little house and a space that’s special just for them, and as a mother of 4 and grandmother of 12, I can tell you that it’s a huge treat for the parents to have all the kids toys and gear out of the main living space and not constantly underfoot. Not everyone has the skill or trees to make a backyard treehouse but the playhouse shed will feel just as fun, especially if you let the kids have a lot of say in the decorating and painting of the play shed.

5) Guest Bunkie Shed
If you’re like me, you may have need for a guest bedroom or 2 but don’t necessarily have the space in the house for it so you either bump one of the kids out of the room for the weekend (and listen to them complain about it while wishing Grandma didn’t have to sleep on Star Wars sheets) or you put them on that lumpy sofa bed in the basement and hope they can still move the next day. But a shed can double as a beautifully finished private space that your guests will love.
