Buyers Checklist and To Do List

Congratulations on the purchase of your new home! You have removed your conditions, and now are wondering what to do next!

Here is a quick checklist of items that you will need to look after when planning your move. We suggest this guide to help you organize your move more efficiently.

  1. The insurance of your new home should be in place before your possession date, and effective at least one day before closing. Your lawyer will want to have a copy of proof of insurance to add to your file, to be able to have the title transferred into your name. If you sold your present home, please make sure that the insurance is kept active until you receive funds from your sale.
  2. Make an appointment with the lawyer of your choice approximately 3 weeks prior to the possession of your new home. If you are purchasing your property in Saskatchewan, you will need to have a lawyer that is licensed and is practicing in this province.
  3. Decide if you want to use a moving company, rent a cube van, or rely on friends and family to help with the move, and make arrangements in advance, especially if you are moving in peak times (end of June, or the 15th or 30/31st of the month).
  4. Contact schools to register your children in new area:
    -- Saskatoon Public School Board (306) 683-8190
    -- Saskatoon Separate School Board (306) 668-7000
  5. Notify the utility companies of your pending move, usually done at least 2-3 weeks before your anticipated move.
  6. Landlines (allow 2 weeks for transfer of an existing phone or installation of a new phone line)
    -- SaskTel 1-800-727-5835
    -- Shaw 1-888-472-2222
  7. Heating (also advise SaskEnergy if you have an account currently with them, and when the date of discontinue will be)
    -- SaskEnergy 1-800-567-8899
  8. Electricity. If you live in Saskatoon, depending on the area you live in, you may have the City of Saskatoon as your electricity provider, not Sask Power.
    -- SaskPower 1-888-757-6937
    -- City of Saskatoon (306) 975-2400
  9. Water
    -- City of Saskatoon (306) 975-2400
  10. Internet/Cable
    -- Shaw Direct 1-888-554-7827
    -- SaskTel 1-800-727-5835
    -- Bell Expressvu 1-888-759-3474
  11. Change of address to doctors, dentists, newspaper carriers, post office, place of employment, SGI (drivers license), insurance companies, financial institutions including credit card companies, any rental companies, magazine subscriptions, etc.

An efficient way to do most of the notices to utility companies and notifications to SGI and Health care providers is to simply go to www.expressaddress.com.
