Spring is when we get a lot of water from the seemingly never ending snow melt (especially this year with the continued snowfall...) and lots of rain. Afterall, April showers bring May flowers... but I hope the flowers know how to grow through snow!
Now is a great time to check your sump pump for proper functioning. The easiest way to test it is to pop the cover off of your sump pit and pour a bucket of water in. If your pump kicks in, great! If it doesn't, you may have to replace it.
Another thing to look at is to check where your discharge pipe is spewing out the water. I have seen countless discharge pipes that are dumping the water right next to the foundation, which will drain down into the weeping tile and right back into your sump pit. Seems a little redundant, don't you think? Have a look and make sure it's discharging away from your foundation and the grading near your foundation allows the water to run away before it has a chance to sit and soak in.
