Our province has finally outgrown having one area code. In 2013 we will be getting a new area code-639. Beginning on May 11, 2013 all SaskTel business and residential customers will have to get used to 10 digit dialing for local calls. I have many people purchasing houses for sale from Saskatoon who are relocating from other provinces so I am sure they are already used to that however as a REALTOR (r) in Saskatoon I will have to ensure that I am ready for the change.
Unfortunately, unlike Alberta, BC and many other provinces, we won't have the area codes broken down by area which could prove to be a bit confusing. You may have 4 phones at your address (land line, cell phones, business, etc) but if you add a 5th it will more than likely come with a different area code. That could create some confusion and many misdials and texts sent to the wrong people! Could be interesting! As a realtor in Saskatoon I will need to be more organized in my contact list to ensure I don't send messages to the wrong clients or agents and to just ensure the messages actually make it to their destination.
As a Saskatoon real estate agent I make a lot of calls and send a lot of texts to realtors in Saskatoon so I am going to have to go through my address book now and ensure to insert the 306 area code to all of the contacts I have before this change comes into effect.
So, to prepare for the 10 digit dialing keep these dates in mind:
- February 25, 2013-callers will hear a recorded message every time they dial 7 digits to remind them that 10 digits will be necessary in the future, but calls will still be completed as dialed.
- May 11, 2013-mandatory 10 digit dialing for local calls begins. If you do not use the area code, calls will not be completed. You also need this for sending text messaging.
- May 25, 2013-effective date for the new 639 area code.
Keep in mind that your number will not change. Anyone with a 306 area code right now will maintain their 306 area code, but the 306 and 639 area codes will be assigned to new phone numbers throughout the province. Long distance stays the same with 1 + area code.
Get ahead of the change and start using the 10 digit dialing now!
