Seasonal Safety Tips

It’s that time of year again when we are reminded of all of the beauty of the season. The most important thing to remember is to remain safe. With this in mind, here are some seasonal safety tips for you:

Christmas Trees

Christmas trees are so beautiful to look at, but we should all be aware of some of the dangers they can create too. One of the biggest dangers is from lights with damaged wires.
A general rule of thumb is that Indoor Christmas lights should be replaced every 3-4 years for safety reasons. Before you put any lights on the tree, inspect them for broken and cracked sockets, frayed, bare or damaged wires and loose connections. Also, no more than 3 strings of lights should be used per extension cord as this can present a real fire hazard.

Spend a few extra dollars to ensure that your lights are in good working order and be sure to turn off the lights anytime you leave the house.

Fresh Cut Trees

Nothing beats the smell of a freshly cut Christmas tree. However, please remember that these trees need watering. By forgetting to water your tree, it will dry out and become a dangerous fire hazard. Take a minute to watch this video that demonstrates just how quickly a Christmas tree can be engulfed in flames. No one wants a house fire, so take the extra precautions and be safe.

Candles

Most people love candles as they create such great ambience. However, candles pose a serious fire risk if they are not handled properly. Most fires that are started by candles are a result of them being forgotten or being placed too close to something that is flammable like curtains or lampshades. Remember to be cautious as almost all fires started by candles could have been prevented.

Take a few minutes this busy holiday season to follow these simple but important safety tips.
From my family to yours, Happy Holidays and Stay Safe!
