Secondary suite Deadline Looms
Secondary suite owners have a few more days to register their units with the City of Red Deer before facing fines and closures.
The deadline to apply is Wednesday. City council extended the deadline, originally July 1.
Once the deadline passes, the city will begin enforcing the bylaw for suites that are illegal. Those suites occupied without a valid permit will be fined $500 for a first offence, $1,000 for second offence and $5,000 for a third offence.
After a violation ticket, summons or stop order has been issued, and the suite continues to be occupied 30 days after the date of violation, the owner is guilty of a continuing offence. Secondary suites are self-contained and have cooking, sleeping and bathroom facilities accessed through one entrance. They can be located on any floor of the house.
