East Side versus West Side

Go East Young Families!

After the American Civil War, athour Horace Greeley wrote his famous words:

"Go west young man and grow up the country."

It was well known that there was much fertile land to farm in the west, and many young families did just that. Well, now that you are in the west of Canada, in the thriving metropolis of Vancouver, I say, "Go East young families!"

The west side of Vancouver is beautiful and very expensive. A look at the property prices in East Vancouver may be just what young families are looking for.

As of last month, the Benchmark, or median price of a detached house in Vancouver West was $2,229,800. The  Benchmark price for Vancouver East was $904,800. That is a substantial difference.

Even once we factor in proximity to downtown, transit and access to bridges - East Van still wins. The traffic on The Ironworkers Memorial Bridge (also known as Second Narrows) is always much lighter and faster moving than on the Lion's Gate Bridge. So, essentially, it's only about a 10-15 minute drive to North Van from East Van.

The East Side also boasts an interesting history. One of the ares earliest settled neighbourhoods was Strathcona - established in 1865. in 1888 the provincial government designated 65 hectares of land adjacent to modern Hastings Street as a park, now known as Hastings Park. Since 1907, the park has been home to the Pacific National Exhibition.

John Hendry Park was established in 1926. It was to encompass Trout Lake. This was when Mrs. Aldene Hamber purchased the land and donated it to the city to prevent it from being converted to a municipal dump. A condition of the donation was that the park be named after her father, John Hendry, and maintained by the city.

Trout Lake is also home to one of the best Farmer's Markets that the East Side has to offer.
