Marketing | Kerr Village Style

Summer is definitely heating up, and so are various summer fairs and markets. Like many towns, Oakville has its share of weekly Farmers Markets... 3 at last count, including an ‘Organic’ one. This year however, local Mompreneur and Artist Chloe Shackelton has created something different ~ a weekly marketplace designed to celebrate the arts, culture and community! Presented by Chloe Visual Arts, in association with the Kerr Street BIA, Arts in the Square assembles in Heritage Square in Oakville's Kerr Village neighbourhood each and every Saturday through October 1st. Each week visitors will find a unique collection of artisans and craft vendors, as well as musicians and other performers, in an open-air market at 350 Kerr Street. Chloe promises "Every Saturday will offer something new and exciting... surprises seem to happen all the time, including highly anticipated end-of-day jam sessions!" Just last weekend, Mister Zero (John Picard) from legendary 80's band The Kings brought his guitar and shared in the musical fun!

Chloe tells us "This journey has grown out of love for the arts and culture, and a needed link to celebrate talented individuals who make things with their hands, that grow or create, and to support the local economy. It has grown out of the sense of community that Kerr Village offers its residents and its business owners. Out of supportive leaders and friends, old and new. It is a building block towards cohesion within the arts, an opportunity to network, providing exposure to the artists and to the community... to create a sense of togetherness while bringing people to share in Oakville's Kerr Village Community."

Though not always known by its current moniker, Oakville's Kerr Village neighbourhood has always had an edgy personality. Close to scenic Oakville Harbour and the main downtown core, Kerr Village is bordered by the CN Railway to the north, Lakeshore Road West to the south, Queen Mary Drive to the east, and Maurice Drive to the west. This eclectic area is fast becoming Oakville's hipster haven; with nightly live music from name talent at Kerr Street's Moonshine Cafe, and popular foodie destinations including Stoney's Bread Company, Salad Thai and Voila Gluten Free Bakeree, as well as unique retailers such as Jet BabyGear MusicHustler Boardshop and others. There are homes to suit most budgets and lifestyles, with recent real estate listings ranging from condos listed at $189k through to a large family dwelling priced at $1,199,000. The Town of Oakville has developed an official Plan for Kerr Village(pdf). This is comprised of land use designations and policies reflecting public consultations. It is designed to guide development in Kerr Village for the next 20 years, and is based on recommendations made in the town's 2004 Kerr Village Revitalization Study.
