Losing your home is one of the most devastating thing that can happen to anyone. That devastation is magnified a thousand fold when you’re also possibly losing your family, everyone that you know, and your country. Oakville feels for Syrians Refugees who are facing one of the biggest challenges any human can endure and aims to help those in need to help them heal and get back on their feet.
Our federal government is working overtime with Canada’s organizations and private sponsors plus all branches and levels of government to help with resettling Syrian refugees in Canada.
By the end of last year, about 10,000 refugees have arrived in Canada courtesy of their private sponsors but note that the cited number is just the first wave. So many men, women, and children are still on their way to our caring nation. To date, more than 11,500 refugees has been given entry to Canada as of this time. By the end of February 2016, Canada is expected to have an additional of 15,000 refugees to help.
Mayor Rob Burton says that Oakville residents are always finding ways to help because it feels good to do good. He also says that Oakville has always been a home for all creeds and races of every ethnic descent and that together, Oakvillians can help keep the Oakville spirit strong as we welcome newcomers to our community. There’s more information about his statement on his Youtube video regarding Oakville and Syrian refugees.
The Town of Oakville supports the plan of the federal government for the refugees and will help in any way possible to help welcome Canada’s newest inhabitants. The 5 phase plan aims to resettle 25,000 Syrian refugees as fast as possible while still protecting the welfare and safety of Canadians.
Sponsoring a Syrian refugee is a huge undertaking and our government has made it easier for you to do so. There are several ways that you can go for to sponsor someone from Syria. All of the information you need to help you be a refugee sponsor are provided at the Government of Canada website.
Other Ways You Can Help
The Oakville Community Foundation has put together a list of information and resources for Oakvillians who are wanting to help.
Six urban centres in Ontario will be housing the agencies for the federally-funded Refugee Assistance Program, namely: Toronto (serving the GTA including York, Peel, and Durham Regions), London, Hamilton, Ottawa, Kitchener-Waterloo, and Windsor.
Donations can be in the form of goods, services, or your time. Not everyone may have the resources to sponsor a refugee, but everyone has a little bit of time and skills that can be shared to a fellow human in need. Refugees will need help learning to speak the local language, get around town, and find work. Volunteering your time to be friends with our newcomers will be much appreciated by the people we are helping. For a detailed list of organizations that are accepting donations in and around Oakville, head on to the Welcoming Syrians page at our Town’s website. Remember, in times of crisis, every little bit helps!
