What is going on in the Haliburton Forest:

Wolf Howl
August 2 2012


Thursday evenings at 8:00 pm Haliburton Forest staff offer a public Wolf Howl. Participants gather at our seminar building to hear a presentation on wolves, their ecology and relationship with humans. After this presentation, the group is taken for a short hike where the interpreter will attempt to "howl up" our resident pack. We cannot guarantee a response, however we do have a good track-record! Dates: Thursdays in July and August Time: 8:00 pm Fee: Admission by donation to help support the scientific research being conducted at Haliburton Forest. Included: Presentation, short hike and a Wolf Howl.


Astronomy Program
August 3-4 2012


Join us for a fascinating evening under the stars! Our resident astronomer will take you out to the on-site, dark sky observatory to view and learn about the night sky. The outdoor program will only be held on clear nights. In case of cloudy nights, exciting indoor, planetarium programs await visitors.... Every Friday and Saturday Evening during July and August. July start times are 9:30 pm and August start times are 9:00 pm. Pre-registration is required $20.00 per adult, $15.00 per youth under 18 HST is additional. Please call (705) 754-2198 to register.


Adventure Day Camp I (Ages 7-11)
August 6-10 2012


Step One - Spend the summer outdoors! The Adventure Day Camp I has been established to provide outdoor skills and pursuits instruction in a safe and fun-filled learning environment. This weeklong day camp will provide opportunities for growth and development of skills and knowledge in a number of outdoor skills and pursuits. Guided by our trained Outdoor Education Staff, the participants will have opportunity to select and design the week's activities. Activities may include canoeing, wilderness travel, group games, wolf studies, tracking, camp crafts, low ropes and so much more! Dates: July 2-6, July 30- August 3 and August 6-10 Time: Daily 9:00 am - 4:00 pm Fee: $175.00 per youth Included: All equipment needed for programming and craft supplies.


Citizen Science: Monitoring Marsh Birds and Amphibians - Natural History Presentation

Presented by Emma Horrigan, U Links Centre for Community-Based Research. Join us Tuesday nights in July and August as we share with you some of the Natural History of Haliburton Forest. In partnership with University of Toronto, Haliburton Forest has put together 9 topics that will be delivered by the experts themselves. Suzie Vinnick performs in the Fleming College Great Hall. 5:30 to 6:30pm. Free! Suzie Vinnick is the owner of a gorgeous, powerful voice and performs with a sweet mixture of engaging candidness and unparalleled musicianship. She won the 2011 Canadian Folk Music Award for Contemporary Singer of the Year, is a two-time Juno nominee and is nominated for four 2011 Canadian Maple Blues Awards (she has previously won six Canadian Maple Blues Awards). Suzie has also twice won 1st place in the Blues Category of the International Songwriting Competition. She has toured with Stuart McLean's The Vinyl Café, the John McDermott Band, with Rick Fines and the Marigolds and has performed for Canadian Peacekeepers in Bosnia and the Persian Gulf. Text in Art with Kal Honey Fleming College, Great Hall. 4:45pm to 6:00pm. Free! If a picture is worth a thousand words, why then do more and more pictures seem to include words? From the early days of collage through Pop Art into contemporary practice, the written word's place in visual art just keeps expanding and diversifying. This presentation delivers a (very) brief look at the history of the written word, then launches into an engaging survey of art and artists incorporating text, from 1900 to the present. A must-see for anyone intrigued by the interplay of art and text.

MHCC Culture Club - Crystals and Minerals

Haliburton County has some of the most sought after minerals in the world. The Genealogical Assoc. of Haliburton Highlands will be setting up some of the most fascinating minerals - some that even glow! Children will learn where these can be found in Haliburton. They will also have the opportunity to grow their own crystals. Minerals have as amazing array of colours and patterns. The end of the day will involve studying minerals and creating a large 'mineral art' canvas. The program runs from 10:30am to 3:30pm and costs $20/child. Fiction Writing Workshops
August 7 2012


In this workshop elements of writing fiction including plot, point of view, characterization, setting and theme will be discussed. Ava Homa, Minden Hills Cultural Centre's Writer-In-Residence, will distribute short stories to participants in advance of the workshop. Participants are encouraged to read the text as a writer, focusing on and analyzing one element at a time then bring forward their critique. Following this participants are encouraged to bring their own work to read out loud to gain constructive feedback from the group. This workshop is intended to help writers build skills.

Ghost Walks this week in the Haliburton Highlands:

Minden Ghost Walks
August 2 & 7, 2012


Every Tues and Thurs in July and August, 7pm regardless of weather. Walks start and end at the River Cone. For the fourth year, the Conjurors offer an hour-long walk under the guidance of a costumed narrator that will introduce you to the history and architecture of Minden through ghostly stories. Adults $10, Children (6-12) $5. Tickets available at Whispers North or from the Coordinator at commencement of the walk.

Adventure Mountain Biking Day Camp (Ages 12-15)
August 6-10 2012


This is a 5 day camp for mountain biker's ages 12 to 15 to explore the Forest trails with a guide. All campers must know how to bike. If bikers are more comfortable on their own bikes and helmets they are more than welcome to bring them. The group will meet at Base Camp every morning at 9:00 am and pick their route for the day. We have over 300km of trails to choose from. Every biker must bring their lunch, water bottle and other personal gear in a backpack. The biking instructor will carry a repair kit with them and bikers will learn quick fixes along the way and also spend time on bike maintenance. Dates: August 6 - 10 Time: 9:00am - 4:00pm Fee: $180.00 per person plus HST Included: All equipment needed for programming.

Set on the shores of Head Lake and steeped in the history of 19th century logging, the Village offers the opportunity to both enjoy a wide variety of outdoor pursuits while exploring the creative talents of our local artists. This bicycle tour (approximately 10km) explores a variety of visual arts offerings while enjoying this scenic village from the comfort of a bicycle seat. Anyone who can ride a bike can do this tour.
