Snowshoeing in the Smith Forest Nature Reserve
January 14 2013

Haliburton Land Trust

1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. Smith Forest - Haliburton:  Whether you are new to snowshoeing or an experienced snowshoer, you will enjoy this outing to Smith Forest, a 77-acre mature Sugar Maple - Basswood Forest. You will climb a moderately steep incline that takes you into the heart of this mature forest. Although this forest cannot be categorized as Old Growth, it is beginning to display some old growth characteristics such as large-diameter snags, woody debris and cavities. Along the way, you will descend into the edges of a large wetland complex along the Burnt River. Here you will see areas of swamp and shallow marsh. Winter is the perfect time to view animal tracks, so be on the look-out for the critters that make Smith Forest home. Remember to bring your snowshoes and dress appropriately for an afternoon outdoors. If you don't own snowshoes, rentals are available, but you must contact the Land Trust office in advance of the event. Host: Haliburton Highlands Land Trust's Smith Forest Leaders: Members of the Smith Forest Monitoring Team Directions:> Meet in Haliburton at the municipal parking lot close to Rails End Gallery for carpooling> Smith Forest located 9 km east of the Town of Haliburton.
