I'm a Canada Get Fit Warrior

Around the Bay I'm a pavement pounding, pedal pushing, endurance testing, hill conquering, sweating (even in the dead of winter) warrior. And it's not easy but practically anyone can be a warrior too.

I have two goals in 2012: to run the Around the Bay 30k road race (pictured right) in March and then to ride the Centurion bike race in September. To prepare for these grueling feats of endurance, I train with a local group called Canada Get Fit. For added incentive, I've teamed up with another group member in a weight loss challenge whereby the person who loses the least amount of weight will have to don a dress for the Around the Bay. As you can imagine, the thought of wearing a lady's Sunday best for all 30k of a race makes one's daily decisions on diet and exercise a Hans Taal, Canada Get Fitlittle bit more clear. Feel free to send me any tips you can to help me avoid this floral and frilly fate.

The advantage of training with a group is that it creates a supportive community or ecosystem of people who's individual goals and accomplishments may vary but who all just want to get and stay fit. Running and cycling training groups are a great way to go if you're new to the sport or require the support of like-minded people to stay motivated.

I've also come to see how running and cycling groups like CGF can help a person who relocates to connect to their new community. For example, CGF has a member named Katie who was introduced to the group by a relocation specialist when she made the move from Minnesota to her new home of Oakville. Katie was already a runner but the group helped her connect to her new surroundings through an acticity that she loved. Likewise, if you're new to an area and want to meet new people and explore your new city or town via it's streets and trails then I highly recommened seeking out a local running or cycling program.

If you're new to Oakville and love to cycle, CGF is still accepting registration for the Spring/Summer cycling program with an end goal to ride the Centurion. Expect a little pain and plenty of reward.
