Every once and awhile, people want to spruce up their home but don’t want to spend a significant amount of money. Here are some tips on how you can complete some simple around the house projects on a budget:
Project 1: Porch planters (approx. $60 based on standard seasonal arrangements) in urns, available at garden centers and large supermarkets.
Why: Curb appeal is what makes visitors and potential buyers feel welcome upon approaching your home. A duo of blooming planters creates instant curb appeal.
Project 2: Hauling the junk out of your basement, attic, garage etc. (approx. $400 based on one small truckload from a junk removal company.)
Why: Getting rid of useless junk and clutter (mold and mildew covered items, broken things that can’t be fixed, old mattresses or furniture in unsalvageable condition, etc.) liberates your storage spaces and makes your home more functional, and, if you plan to sell your home in the future it will be more open-house friendly.
Project 3: A new backsplash in crisp, ever-stylish white tile (approx.$150, plus a couple of inexpensive pendant lights, approx. $50 each.)
Why: Even if you can’t afford a kitchen reno, small changes like upgrading lighting and inexpensive tile will give your space a new look.
Project 4: Powder room makeover (new vanity, toilet, vanity light, paint, approx. $1,500.)
Why: It is less of an undertaking than a full bathroom renovation; a modernized powder room is a strong selling point if you put your home on the market. Smaller scale means a smaller budget, along with faster results.
Project 5: Deluxe closet organization kit, $249 at Rona.
Why: Having your closets all organized and laid out makes shopping your own wardrobe a breeze. This will reduce the chances of buying duplicates or triplicates of stuff you already own. Better storage means no more creased clothing either.
