OWNER OF DOWNTOWN BUILDING FINED $3500.OO

An owner of an apartment/mercantile establishment in St.Thomas has been fined $3500.00 under the Fire Protection and Prevention Act for failing to protect persons using the fire escape in case of emergency.

The charges stem from an inspection on August 24, 2010 where 8 infractions were observed.  Fire Prevention Officer, Brian Leverton says that the owner fixed seven of the infractions pretty quickly, but refused to complete the last one.

It is the responsibility of the owner to maintain fire safety escape systems to protect the lives of the occupants.  Under the Ontario Fire Code the court can impose fines up to $100,000 per infraction and up to one year in jail.  The charge/incident is separate from any fires that occurred last week.
