UNDERSTANDING SQUARE FOOTAGE

In the Real Estate market we are constantly talking square footage - but what does it mean!

In principal it is simple, the exterior width of a home times the length.  For example 30 ft. wide times 60 ft. long = 1800 sq. ft.  Now if it is a two storey and the dimensions remain the same we have 1800x2=3600sq ft. 

 The problem here is most homes now are of irregular shape but the principal remians the same - just more measurements.  Basements do not count - there has to be at least a crawl space beneath the floor to qualify for sq. footage.  So you often find we will list a finished basement for example as living space, usable space, ect. anything but sq. footage.  But when your insurance company asks for sq. footage - don't count the basement!
