From May 10 to 13, over 300 REALTORS® from across the country – including an impressive showing from our Board – were in Ottawa attending CREA's annual Political Action Committee (PAC) Days conference.
They spoke with one voice in asking the federal government to improve the Home Buyers' Plan (HBP), a plan that was partially created due to CREA's past lobbying efforts. In all, 160 appointments were scheduled with federal MPs, including meetings between our representatives and all seven MPs from Fraser Valley communities.
Gopal Sahota chairs FVREB's Government Relations (GR) Committee. "Being new to this committee, PAC Days was a real eye opener for me. After meeting with our Members of Parliament, it's clear that our profession's lobbying efforts make a difference. Our recommendations and research on behalf of home buyers is appreciated and respected."
REALTORS® recommended the federal government:
- Index the HBP to the Consumer Price Index (CPI) in $2,500 increments. This move would ensure that it never loses its purchasing power and continues to help make homeownership affordable.
- Make the HBP available to help Canadians maintain homeownership after job relocation, the death of a spouse, a decision to accommodate an elderly family member or a marital breakdown.
