Current Committee Involvement.
Heather is very happy to be elected to our Board of Directors at London & St. Thomas Association of Realtors, for the 2014-2015 term! She welcomes this new chapter in her life and is learning lots about our board and how it is run!
Heather is the Chair person for the Quality of Life Committee.
The Quality of Life Committee lives by 5 guiding principles.
Principle 1: Ensuring Economic Vitality
Principle 2: Housing Opportunities
Principle 3: Preserving our enviornment
Principle 4: Protecting homeowners
Principle 5: Building better communities.
Quality of Life (QOL) is both a philosophy and an analytical tool. It helps us to identify ways in which The London St. Thomas Association of Realtors (LSTAR) as an Association or its Members as individuals can improve or enhance our communities' social, physical or economic environment.
Heather is also the chair person of the Home At Last (HAL) Committee.
The first of the five Quality of Life Principles to which LSTAR subscribes to is, “Protecting economic vitality.” The second is, “Providing housing opportunities.” That’s why LSTAR spearheaded; the “Home at Last” Affordable Homeownership Partnership back in 2005 – to help low income families achieve homeownership,To extend the useful life of existing buildings through rehabilitation, effectively revitalizing neighbourhoods, and to provide an opportunity to promote the build/renovation trades to students/apprentices to ensure the sustainability of our pool of newly skilled tradespersons and the ongoing economic development and viability of the region.
The first project with the HAL committee that Heather was involved in was that of renovating 57 Burslem. A house that had been donated to Habitat for Humanity and was a joint effort by CMHC, LSTAR and Habitat for Humanity. Habitat for Humanity was placed in charge of construction and family selection, while LSTAR assumed financial responsibility for the renovation and arranged for professional services – realty services, home inspections, energy audits, etc. CMHC committed to $16,000 in RRAP funding and coordinated publicity and media relations and the North American Trade School donated labour.
The property at 57 Burslem Street had been donated to Habitat for Humanity and renovations began in the Spring with a projected end date in June. However, due to unforeseen problems with the foundation, the renovation took longer than anticipated. It was completed in November 2010 and the family of Scott, Melissa and Hunter Moss took possession on November 24, 2010. The City contributed $15,000 to this renovation, the REALTORS Care Foundation provided an additional $10,000. The total cost of the renovation was $35,000.
The 2nd project was a home at 1189 Huron St., that was donated to Habitat for Humanity by The City of London. The City moved it from its original site across town to an empty lot at 1189 Huron Street, where it was rehabilitated by the Home at Last Affordable Housing Partnership. Habitat for Humanity was placed in charge of construction and family selection, while LSTAR assumed financial responsibility for the renovation and arranged for professional services – realty services, home inspections, energy audits, etc. CMHC committed to $16,000 in RRAP funding and coordinated publicity and media relations and the City of London generously kicked in an additional $15,000 to the project. Romeo Hernandez Gonzalez, Rosalba Lopez and sons Pablo and Gabriel received the keys to their new home at the end of November 2011 just in time for Christmas.
THE LYN COUPLAND OUTSTANDING SERVICE AWARD
ABOUT THE AWARD
Every year, the Executive Committee selects one or more worthy individuals whose service to the Association they judge to be above and beyond the call of duty as the recipient of LSTAR'S most prestigious honour - the Lyn Coupland Outstanding Service Award. In past years, this honour has often gone to long-time Director or a Past President. This year is a little different.
ABOUT THE RECIPIENT - HEATHER ARNOTT
Since she joined the Association in 1999, she has served on a number of Committees and Task Forces, including the Professional Standards Committee, the Discipline Committee, the Branding Task Force, and the Quality of Life Committee, which she chairs in 2011.
However, it is not the extent of the volunteerism on behalf of LSTAR that brought her to the Committee's attention, so much as its scope and depth. Asked to liaison between Habitat for Humanity London and LSTAR for the duration of our second Home at Last Affordable Housing Project, she immersed herself not just in that one project, but in the organization overall. As a member of Habitat's Family Selection Committee, she took on the role of Family Partner and provided support and guidance to Scott and Melissa Moss, shepherding them through the completion of their sweat equity requirement and preparing them for home ownership - and she did this from the moment of her assignment to the moment the family received the keys to their new home. Nor did her work for Habitat end with the completion of this renovation. She continues to sit on the Family Selection Committee to this day and will be our liaison for our next HAL project.
This REALTOR doesn't pay her Quality of Life principles lip service; she lives and breathes them. In our books, such exemplary service to our community equals outstanding service to our assocation. For that reason, I am very pleased to present Heather Arnott with the Lyn Coupland Outstanding Service Award with our thanks and our congratulations.

Brave sales reps rappel down building for Easter Seals!!
Recently in London, Ont. nine brave Realtors and staff from Century 21 First Canadian rappelled down the tallest office building in the city to raise money for Easter Seals. The team garnered the top spot for team fundraising at $22,716.
Vito Campanale, broker of record for the office, says, “I couldn’t be more proud of our team. I know that we have great people in our office but the fact that they literally put themselves out there to raise so much money for such a great cause is humbling. I don’t think that I could rappel down a 26-storey building so I’m happy that there are people in our organization that could and did.” Century 21 First Canadian Corp. was also a corporate sponsor for The Drop Zone.
