The Coast Salish First Nations inhabited the Esquimalt area for 4000 years before the European settlers came to Vancouver Island. The Township of Esquimalt got its name from the First Nations word ‘ es-whoy-malth’ meaning ‘place of gradating shoaling water’. In the 1800’s the British Royal Navy used Esquimalt Harbour. The Canadian Forces base is still Esquimalt’s largest employer however the graving dock is the largest non-military site for shipbuilding and repair on the West Coast.
Esquimalt is the municipality immediately to the west of Victoria. This beautiful Peninsula incorporates 1000 hectors of land and is not only surrounded by water but prides itself on its numerous gardens and ocean vistas. Esquimalt has a walkable urban center with a small town feel. There is a mix of high quality residential properties, some excellent waterfront properties, an abundance of condominium/townhomes and a very active business community including a light industrial district. Some of Esquimalt's most attractive residential areas are Saxe Point and Rockheights. Their progressive leadership and commitment to lead the way in community sustainability makes it the perfect balance between city and urban life.
Esquimalt has a full range of recreational facilities including a curling rink, indoor swimming pool, recreation centre and the top ranked Gorge Vale Golf Club.
