CENTURY 21 Heritage Group Ltd. › Esquimalt, BC
The Coast Salish First Nations inhabited the Esquimalt area for 4000 years before the European settlers came to Vancouver Island. The Township of Esquimalt got its name from the First Nations word ‘ es-whoy-malth’ meaning ‘place of gradating shoaling water’. In the 1800’s the British Royal Navy used Esquimalt Harbour. The Canadian Forces base is still Esquimalt’s largest employer however the graving dock is the largest non-military site for shipbuilding and repair on the West Coast.
Esquimalt is the municipality immediately to the west of Victoria.
