Stoney Creek, ON, Canada

City Information
Stoney Creek, ON

Stoney Creek is located on the south shore of western Lake Ontario. It was settled by Loyalists after the American Revolution. Stoney Creek was put on the map because of the Battle of Stoney Creek during the war of 1812. Several dozen soldiers were killed in battle. It was important because it outnumbered British regulars and Canadian military defeated invading Americans. The site has been preserved as Battlefield House with its associated museum, monument and park.

Another landmark would be The Erland Lee Museum, which is the site of the first Women's Institute in the world. The main building was built by John Lee, the son of James Lee, a British ex-service man. James and his family imigrated to Saltfleet township (Stoney Creek) as loyalists in the 1790's. In 1972 Federated Women's Institutes of Ontario purchased the Lee home, preserving the vintage home as an important historic memorial to the Institutes beginnings and to a vanished middle class rural Victorian lifestyle.

The Devils Punchbowl may also be of interest to some. It is located east of Highway 20 on Ridge Road. It is a 37 metre ribbon water fall. It took millions of years and many glacial waters to create this natural wonder. There is also a 50 foot high steel cross illuminated with 106 lights, that stands on the outlook. Just up the road is the Punch Bowl Country Market, which is family owned and operated, full of delicous home baked goods, local produce and a green house.

Every year there are 2 festivals in Stoney Creek - The Stoney Creek Flag Day Festival and The Peach Festival. The Flag Festival was started in 1969 and honours Canada's internationally famous flag. It takes place a month before Canada Day. The Peach Festival is a huge hit with residents and visitors, full of live entertainment, arts and crafts, E.D Smith Fun Factory, "A Peach of a Car Show" and a large variety of food and drinks.

You may also want to visit Hutch's Stoney Creek Dairy Bar and Restaurant only open during the summer, serving ice cream and burgers, or Eastgate Square. which is a large mall that straddles the former border between Hamilton and Stoney Creek.
