Highway 8 and Future 401 Expansions???

With highways 7, 8, and 85 under construction all summer long connecting KW and outlying regions to the 401, the traffic was a little "undesirable" during most peak times, lets be honest, it was terrible. With most of the work finished up now, the results are, well, not much difference. There was nothing really added to the highway to make it flow better, just widening a few lanes. The most useful thing accomplished was the on and off ramps at Fischer Hallman and Ottawa.

However there are plans to open a 'bus bypass' lane on the widened sections of highway 8, on the future plans for the 401 stretch here in KW and Cambridge.

"The bus bypass lanes are not dedicated bus lanes. Instead, they are wider shoulders which Grand River Transit buses can use during severe 401 congestion. The added cost of the bus bypass shoulders will be on the region's tab, Fisher added.

Bus bypass shoulders are expected to open this year on the recently-widened stretch of Highway 8 in Kitchener"   http://www.therecord.com/news-story/4309713-401-widening-looms-for-cambridge-kitchener-stretch/

"The ministry, Fisher said, expects to have ownership and possession of all the properties required for the 401 widening project by July 2014." We will at least see 6 lanes turn into 10, after the lane closures that are begining this Spring 2014 stretching the construction completion date sometime in 2016. The government of Ontario and the region expect this will benefit the community and the businesses along this corridor of highway, and possibly bring more people and investments to the region.
