Welcome to my “Versatile Vancouver” blog! Each week, you can find here some of the lesser-known fun activities for individuals and families that our vibrant Vancouver area has to offer. Some activities are free and some cost a little; sometimes there are “special occasion” events that I think you might find worth considering!
FIFA Women’s World Cup Fan Zone
When: Saturday, June 6 – July 5 (various days)
Where: Larwill Park (bordered by Georgia, Cambie, Dunsmuir and Beatty streets)
Time: 12noon – 7PM on June 6; see website for times on specific dates
Get in on the action as the Women’s World Cup comes to Vancouver! The free, family-friendly Fan Zone features live soccer match broadcasts, local live music performances, exhibition soccer tournaments, athlete autograph opportunities, interactive games and hands-on activities, and even a participatory parade to BC Place Stadium on home game nights! Go Canada Go!!!
Marpole Community Day
When: Saturday, June 6
Where: Oak Park, Marpole Community Centre, 990 W. 59th Ave., Vancouver
Time: 11AM – 3PM
A great family day to get everyone in the mood for summer! Free activities include amusement rides, inflatables, games, stage performances and professional entertainment. You can visit the silent auction and perhaps win a unique item or a gift certificate!
Landfill Open House
When: Saturday, June 6
Where: Vancouver Landfill, 5400 72nd Street, Delta
Time: 10AM – 3PM
No, wait! Really, this is the best fun that a kid could have! Imagine getting to sit in actual landfill equipment…or watching the hawks that are used in bird control…or making a craft with a junkologist…or discovering how electricity and heat are generated from landfill gas! A great family event that includes free hamburgers and hot dogs, as well as a take-home bag of compost ready for your Junior Green Thumbs to use in the garden. I love free stuff, and this is top-notch!
Vancouver Mini Maker Faire
When: Saturday, June 6 – Sunday, June 7
Where: PNE Forum Building
Time: 10AM – 6PM
Cost: $9 (child) - $47 (family); ticket info at makerfaire.ca/2015-tickets
In its 5th year now, the Mini Maker Faire is a chance for everyone in the family to try their hand at a new craft or skill. There will be presentations including 3D Printing and Vintage Musical Equipment, and workshops including Silicone Mold Making and Intro to Weaving. Lots of hands-on ways to expand your creativity this weekend!
