Summer in Vancouver
Now that we Vancouverites are well into a beautiful summer here on the lower mainland, here are some great ideas to beat the heat or revel in it!
The top of the list has to be the event of the summer for a lot of people. The Honda Celebration of Light. The very first of these events was held in July and August of 1990. Then it was called The Benson and Hedges Celebration of Light. The estimated attendance was 1.4 million. Since 2007 it was sponsored by HSBC. Typically, 3 different countries compete, complete with music and a fantastic light display. This year The United Kingdom starts things off on July 27th with their "PYRO 2000" display, next up on July 31st will be be our own Canadian team called "Calagary Based Fireworks Spectacular", and finishing off the competion will be Thailand on August 3rd with their "Thailand Fireworks" display.
Here is a helpful map to guide you on your way through parking and veiwing options.
And you just can't miss out on the Stanley Park 125th Anniversary Party, August 24th and 25th. The city is kicking in $200,000 for this big bash, that will see lots of top-name performers at Brockton Oval, plus it's own "Sportsapaloosa"! Then "Live at Second Beach" will play host to such names as The Born Ruffians, The Matinee and Ali Milner.
In addition to all the festivities, you might also want to check out the re-vamped Stanley Park Train and Klahowya Village. Klahowya means 'welcome' and this new site in the park opened on June 21, which was National Aboriginal Day. It will stay open until Sept.2, 2013. The miniature train has been re-dubbed the "The Spirit Catcher" and runs through hte beautiful surroundings as you learn about the story of the 'Spirit Bear'. Lots to do what with story-telling, arts and crafts and performances, and it's family friendly!
And let's not forget all the Summer Theater going on in Vancouver. Theater Under The Stars, or TUTS, is running with the stage version of the movie "Legally Blonde", and "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". Definately worth checking out!
Bard on the Beach is still going strong and into its 24th season. The offerings this summer are 'Twelfth Night', 'Hamlet', 'Measure for Measure' and 'Elizabeth Rex'. Always delightful and breath-takingly beautiful, get out and be a culture vulture!
Whatever you decide to do with your sunny days and cool nights, enjoy all the best that this wonderful city has to offer. Pack a lunch, bring the family and wear your sunscreen!
