Vancouver's Best Kept Music Secrets

Vancouver's Best Kept Music Secrets

I'm willing to bet that many Vancouverites would be pleasantly surprised to find that this world class city of ours has some wonderful musical surprises to offer up. I discovered the first of these a number of years ago. Bluebird North is an amazing musical collective based on the very popular Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. I started attending these musical events when the collective was still without a permanent home. Now that home is the Roundhouse. These sessions are based on The Bluebird Café in Nashville. It is one of the world’s preeminent listening rooms and the venue has gained worldwide recognition as a songwriter’s performance space where the “heroes behind the hits” perform their own songs; songs that have been recorded by chart-topping artists in all genres of music.

Nashville's famed Bluebird Café, opened in 1982. The venue is well known for helping launch the careers of Garth Brooks, Ashley Cleveland and Pam Tillis. Bluebird North is endorsed by the Bluebird Cafe in Nashville. Bluebird North is an intimate, interactive musical showcase hosted by the S.A.C. that brings together some of Canada’s most inspiring songwriters to share their songs and stories. During this, primarily acoustic, informal evening, each featured songwriter will perform their songs and share the ‘back story’ and inspiration about how each song was written.

The Host of the Vancouver Bluebird North is the very talented singer/songwriter, Shari Ulrich. Such a wonderfully talented and fun human being. Check out this video of Sheri singing with her old band, The Hometown Band, this hit that you will surely remember from the the late 70's, FlyingSheri is on the road touring as I write this.

The next Bluebird North Event is coming up on July 4, 2012, at The Roundhouse, 181 Roundhouse Mews (Davie & Pacific),Tickets: $15 available at the door and S.A.C. (Songwriter's Association of Canada) members receive a discount at the door. You now know this little secret - so do yourself a favour and check it out!

The next well-kept secret event that should be more well known is called Just Singing 'Round

Just Singing’ Round is an arts and culture showcase that holds shows on the first Tuesday of every month. This community foundation also raises money for numerous local charities. Just Singing Round is held at the Vancouver Rowing Club, located at the entrance to Stanley Park off of Georgia street - 604 687 3400 - Doors open at 6:00pm sharp - dinner is served from 6:30 pm to 7:30 pm - the show starts at 7:40pm - first intermission at 8:30pm - second set starts at 9:00pm - show finishes at 10:00pm. They have single to entire table ticket purchases available. Ticket donations are $25 for adults, $15 for seniors/students and children under 12 free.
Emelle's Catering will again be providing the scrumptious meals for 2012 and we can not wait to see what culinary delights will come our way.

You might also appreciate the Make Music event that is happening in Yaletown this week, on Thursday June 21st, 5pm-10pm. They currently have 76 bands coming to play for 1 hour each, with all styles of music represented. The bands begin setting up after 4pm on Thursday, in locations throughout Yaletown, both indoor and outdoor venues (two of the bands are bringing in pianos!). Many of the Yaletown restaurants have stepped up and offered locations for the bands, which shows great support for this new event.

So now you know these little secrets too. Treat yourself, someone special or a group of friends to your inside information. You can thank me later. Enjoy!
