Victoria Day in Vancouver 2013
Well, it's that time of year again. The May long weekend. This weekend has come to mean many things to many people over the years. To school kids it means not only a day off school, but also heralds the last long weekend before summer. They begin counting down the school days left between them and warm, sunny freedom.
For the green thumbs in your life, this long weekend is the point of no return for getting their annuals and perrenials in the ground to ensure taking advantage of the full growing season. Every garden center around will be swarming with the busy bees.
For still others this weekend marks the beginning of the Night Markets in Richmond and Vancouver. Nothing beats the authenticity of Vancouver's Chinatown, complete with Heritage buildings and history seeped in the sidewalks. This year you can look forward to Hip Hop Kareoke, Majong, outdoor film screenings, storytelling and kite-making. The Vancouver Chinatown Night Market runs every weekend from May 17th to September 8th from 6pm – 11pm.
And for those who can't wait for the ocean to warm up, all of Vancouver's Public Swimming Pools officially open this weekend. Probably the most famous of these is Kits Pool. Not only is it a spectacular outdoor pool with beautiful views of the mountains and adjacent ocean, but it is the only salt water pool in Vancouver.
Whatever you decide to do for the long weekend, make sure you bring your sunscreen and your umbrella - after all- this is Vancouver!
