Madoc is a township in the municipality of Centre Hastings, Hastings County, 45 minutes away from the city of Belleville. The area has a rich mining history, as gold was discovered nearby in 1866. The Canada Talc mine is now shutting down and is one of only three mines on the planet that has been in steady operation for more than one hundred years.
The town offers a variety of dining experiences, convenient shopping with a full-sized grocery, hardware, building supplies, dairies, and little stores selling county treasures and locally made products. The farmer’s market offers a variety of products from May to October.
The Madoc region has one of the highest concentrations of artists in Canada. Musical, literary and artistic presentations are ongoing throughout the year with larger summer concerts and festivals.
Madoc’s most prominent feature is its premier skate park, with 12 700 sq ft concrete area, excellent for kids of all abilities. The park also boasts a large playground with a 3 deck high mega tower, a splash pad, picnic areas, a shade structure, and an arts centre for outdoor and indoor performances. The skate park hosts an annual Madoc Skate Park Competition, drawing competitors from all over east Ontario, and keeping spectators on the edges of their seats. The competition is topped off with an evening of entertainment and fireworks.
Madoc offers even more for people of all interests with its West Highland Golf Course, and its Lawn Bowling Club, situated in Whytock Park. The Moira Lake is also ideal for boating. A simple scenic drive through the county will also bring you to an artist’s studio, an organic farm, maple syrup market, and the award-winning Ivanhoe Cheese Factory. Just on the outside of the town is a historic pioneer village and conservation area called the O’Hara Mill. This sawmill draws many visitors and is the site that hosts the annual Drum Nation Festival geared toward creative expression and family interaction. It celebrates music and dance and the presence of the drum in each culture.
For those seeking further thrills, you can visit the Madoc Motocross, one of the best motocross tracks in Ontario. This site even hosted a national competition for the Maguire Motocross Racing Series and is planned to host it in the future as well.
Education is made convenient in Madoc as it is home to several elementary schools as well as the Centre Hastings Secondary School.
