Getting closer to the end of the month, we are sad to say we will miss meeting with all the amazing local businesses. We will be featuring Sydney and area local businesses for the month of March! We have also decided that once a month going forward we will do a blog feature on random local businesses in our area, just to keep the love alive :) Today, we met with Loretta Dawe, owner and operator of Loretta's New and Used Furniture and Collectibles, located at 268 Commercial Street in North Sydney! Loretta's shop of unique items is truly an interesting and inspiring place to visit and shop, as it is filled with beautiful gifts and home decor :) The store has been open since November 30, 2015 but was actually open 7 years ago in the same location!
Here is what Loretta was saying today:
Tell us about why you started this venture:
My husband and I owned Cisco's chip wagon and the work started to get really hard, it was constant work all the time and so we decided to retire and put the wagon up for sale. Well, let me tell you, retirement was not for me! When we had Cisco's we were constantly asked by tourists where to shop for gift or novelty items and really there wasn't much in the area, so that's what got the ball rolling in a way. We wanted a novelty shop in the downtown core, with high end furniture and collectibles, to add to the tourism experience of our beautiful area.
Tell us what it is that you offer/bring to Cape Breton:
We buy and sell items and furniture both locally and abroad, lots of up-cycling if possible and supporting others in similar business. We like to think we make people's homes and environment beautiful and we stage the shop so that people get ideas and we help them put things together for their own space if needed. We have five star ratings from our customers as well as a well set up shop and we love working with the public and cater to their needs.
Any big plans coming up?:
Well, the shop itself just not long opened and we are constantly adding things in and getting it set up the way we want. We are planning a trip away to get more items so things stay fresh and we always find such unique things from away so that's exciting!
What is the most important thing you learned about running your own business in Cape Breton?:
The most important thing is to go into any venture with a positive mindset and tell yourself "I'm going to make it!" The biggest damper on a business starting out is doubt and not having the confidence to keep at it when it's tough, because it's not always easy but it's worth it if you make it through!
What are your favorite things to do or places to visit in Cape Breton when you are not busy running the business?:
We love to visit yard sales and flea markets! We also love trips to Baddeck and driving around the Cabot Trail, Cape Breton is so beautiful, it's not hard to find something to do on days off :)
Thank you so much Loretta! We will certainly encourage anyone in the area or coming for a visit to check out your lovely treasures! By the way, your window display is so lovely to look at!
