Through the past couple weeks, we have had numerous businesses based out of the Black Spoon Cafe and so today we got to speak to the owners of the cafe themselves! Monica and Mike Black, owners and operators of the cafe, were on hand to give us some insight into their world in business! Based at 7 Convent Street, North Sydney, NS, The Black Spoon Cafe is quite a happening place with so much to offer our community, and delicious food and drink options. The cafe has been in operation for a little more than a year now and growing a bigger following each and every day :)
Here is what Monica and Mike are saying at The Black Spoon Cafe:
Tell us about why you started this venture:
For the love of COFFEE and healthier options! We wanted to add to the community in a positive, special way. There was not a place to sit down, sip, and chat over specialty coffee on the north side. We also wanted to build a business where our teenage daughter could work, as well as to build our business platform and branch out!
Tell us what it is that you offer/bring to Cape Breton?:
Vegan options, a healthier way of eating; we love to promote healthy living and quality food choices and a seasonal menu with local ingredients. We also bring specialty coffees to the North side; latte, cappuccino, americano, just about anything you can think of! We also have healthy delicious smoothies!
Any big plans coming up?:
Yes, we plan to be open in the summer this year! A new spring menu coming in April with seasonal local ingredients. Also, we have a number of other new and existing businesses joining us in the building and that is awesome!
What is the most important thing you learned about running your own business in Cape Breton?:
We learned how important it is to keep your heart and soul into it :) To always stay true to what exactly it is you want your business to be without outside influence. Be original!
What are your favourite things to do or places to visit in Cape Breton when you are not busy running the business?:
We love all the beaches especially Boisdale public beach and hiking. Polletts Cove was an amazing experience we cannot wait to do again! We spend as much time with family and friends and also spend a lot of time at the rink for hockey :)
Thanks so much Mike and Monica for answering our questions today and we love all the things you offer Cape Breton XO
