I was brought up in the Scottish Borders on a Mixed farm, being educated at the Berwickshire High School in Duns. On leaving school, I attended Oatridge Agricultural College and obtained my NCA in agriculture, after which I returned to the family farm in 1975. The following year, my wife Carolyn and I were married, and operated the farm until 1988 when we sold up and moved to Canada with our three children and my parents. Our farm in Manitoba was strictly Grain, so in the autumn of 1988, I sat the real estate exams and have been actively involved in the sale of farms to many overseas clients since the spring of 1989, a number of whom have become close friends and acquaintances. Over the years, we have built up our farming operation in Manitoba and now have some 4,000 acres of grain land together with a cattle feedlot and a few suckler cows.
