I like to think of fall as a "second New Year". Vacation time has ended, kids go back to school and young adults are off to college & university. It's a great time for many people to re-group and get back on regular schedules. Autumn is also a fabulous time to put your home on the market and here are a few ideas to get your yard in tip top shape for showings.
Here's Some Autumn Gardening Tips:
- Rejuvenate and extend your summer garden with some new fall plants.- Try some Coral Bells (Heuchera) for interest and colourful foilage. Ornamental Cabbage and Flowering Kale are readily available and make a bold statement in the colder season garden. Icicle Pansies fill in empty spots and can survive the winter if treated properly. And of course everyone's favorite Mums (Chrysantemums) provide an enormous selection of colours to choose from.
- Plant perennials - fall is a good time to plant trees, shrubs and other perennials because of lower temperatures and more rainfall. Now is an ideal time to divide many perennials for transplanting too.
- Lawns and Sod- Now is the perfect time to seed or re-seed lawns and install new sod.
- General Yard Cleanup - trim hedges and shrubs to keep them compact and bushy from ground level. Gather fallen leaves, grass clippings and shredded prunings. Fall is the perfect time to start a compost pile with autumn leaves and yard debris. Don't overload your compost with any one particular ingredient - maintain a good mixture. Apply a blanket of rich mulch to flower beds and around trees and shrubs to help retain moisture during the winter months.
