Garth Brown of Affordable Housing Halton saying that waiting until 2014 to implement new housing initiatives is too long. There are currently thousands of Halton residents waiting for units currently. Halton has until 2014 to finalize their 10-year plan to address affordable housing issues in the region.
Brown says that 75% of the people on the wait list are looking for single bedroom accommodation, and that comfortable units can be created for less than $50,000 per unit. One concerning consideration is that developers are building units priced at $308,000 and calling it affordable.
Halton will receive $10.7 million from the province of Ontario from 2012 to 2015 as part of the Investment in Affordable Housing program. This funding will support the development of new and converted rental units, down-payment assistance, and rent subsidiaries.
