STAY-CATION DESTINATION - CENTRAL ALBERTA

Has your budget kept you local this summer, despite grand plans? Here are a few ways you can make the most of sticking around town. From spas, ponds, farmer's markets, street festivals, baseball games and more, there are a variety of ways you can spend a short vacation on a budget, enjoying local sites and activities.

Attend a Farmers Market:
Produce, flowers, crafts, entertainment, baked goods—today’s Farmers Markets have something for almost everyone. It’s much more than just garden vegetables. If you haven’t been to one in a while, you owe it to yourself to check it out. Call your local Chamber of Commerce to find out the locations and times of markets in your area. Arrive early to find the best deals––if it’s a popular market merchants may sell out of goods early. Once you have what you came for, just take the time to stroll around. Grab a drink, enjoy the entertainment, and watch other people go about their business.

Visit a Local Day Spa:
Plan a day with girlfriends or your significant other getting pampered at a local Spa. Most day spas have running
specials, or do couple’s massages which end up running a little cheaper than you would normally pay.

Enjoy your escape from the world! Spend all day at the spa, or schedule a few treatments and go to dinner at a special place afterward. Enjoy yourself!

Pretty Bird:
The Kerry Wood Nature Centre is located north on 45th Ave in Red Deer. It also serves as an entrance to the Gaetz Lakes Sanctuary. The KWNC has a number of feeder stations in place that attract birds. Many of the birds have become
tolerant to human viewers and will sit for photos. The Sanctuary has a walking trail only. One loop is one kilometre long and features a viewing platform overlooking the west lake. This is a great place to take children to see birds and many other wild things. The second trail is four kilometres and traverses the escarpment of the river valley. There are several viewing platforms and interpretive signs. It is a relatively easy trail with stairs to overcome the hardest parts. Why not make a day of it and bring a picnic lunch and enjoy the natural surroundings?!

You Can’t Take the Country Out of the Girl:
With over 217 acres of parkland Heritage Ranch trail rides offer many different areas to explore. They feature Trail Horse Experience Packages that include packed lunch on the trail or in West Lake Grill! Heritage Ranch also features themed shared date nights, such as a Carriage Ride, Trail Ride & Dine, ATV Ride & Picnic Lunch, Photo Shoot & Dinner for 2 and Dinner & Dance Instruction. For more information, call 403-347-4977.

Go on a family cycling adventure:
You don't have to be an avid (or experienced) biker to have a blast. For a safer adventure traverse local bike trails instead of hitting the streets. Red Deer boasts an extensive trail system. Visit www.reddeer.ca for a detailed map of the trail system in our area. Get out and enjoy the summer air!

Host a patio party or organize a block party:
Invite friends or neighbors over for a low-key get-together of fun finger foods and stylish cocktails on your patio or deck. For inspiration, google cocktail recipes and party food ideas. Create lasting friendships — all within a few steps from your own front door.

Ready to Wind Down for the Night?:
Got a big backyard, a rather nice tent, but limited travel budget this summer? How about setting up a "glamp"? A combination of glamorous living and camping, glamping is the enjoyment of an outside space made luxurious. Set up your family tent outside, and deck it to the nines, so you and your kids can stay outside in style. Want some great glamp ideas? Then try
GlampingHub.com to see how some resorts are taking the inside, outside.

Free Concerts & Events:

Sticking Around Town Can Be Just as Fun:
Always remember—just because you aren’t able to take off to some out-of-the way destination this summer, you can have a memorable, enjoyable time away; in your own back yard! Happy Staycation!
