Kelowna's Highway 33 widening project is a go!
The Province of B.C. and the City of Kelowna recently announced a $23.5 million partnership project to widen Highway 33 to four lanes between Muir Road and Gallagher Road. The stretch of road to be widened is approximately 4.2 km long and is scheduled to begin this coming summer and to be completed by the Fall of 2010. The Province is funding $11,5 million, with the City picking up the tab for the balance. The project is expected to create 150 new jobs, which is never a bad thing in today's slower economic times!
The local students, teachers and parents of nearby Black Mountain Elementary are also breathing a collective sigh of relief as new sidewalks and traffic signals are to be a part of the infrastructure plans aimed at increased safety. There is also talk of more improvements to Highway 33 heading up the climbing hill just past Gallagher Road, will be made in the coming weeks. This expansion project is long overdue with several close calls of aggressive drivers passing slow moving trucks along this particular stretch of highway.
