Westside Naming Committee rejected by Westside Council.
The following story highlights the newly formed Westside District Municipality naming troubles. There seems to be a little more press about the actual selection of a name for the region then the inevitable tax hikes that are about to be sprung on the tax paying base there. The municipality still needs to finance and build facilities for police, fire, ambulance and let's not forget a city hall. That being said I must say I really do like the name of "Okanagan Hills" there just seems to be a classy feel to it. The other names that are on the ballot are all too familiar or recycled and I would think a fresh name that identifies with what the area is all about makes the most sense!

The chair of the Westside Naming Committee feels his committee may have been a waste of time.
Adam Les made the comments after Westside Council rejected all of his committees recommendations Tuesday.
Instead of a three ballot question, Westside voters will be asked two questions on a citizen survey, being held in conjunction with the November 15 municipal election.
Question 1 - The official name of our municipality is Westside District Municipality. Do you wish to change it, yes or no?
Question 2 - If the name of the municipality is to be changed, which name do you prefer? (choose only one).
- Okanagan Hills
- Westbank
- West Kelowna
- Westlake
The motion, put forward by Councillor, Doug Findlater, passed 5-2.
Mayor Rosalind Neis and Councillor Heather Pilling, both members of the naming committee, voted against the council motion.
"The process wasn't(a waste of time). I think the end result may have been, which is unfortunate. We dedicated literally hundreds of hours and to come out of it in the end with every recommendation rejected, I certainly feel the end result never justified the effort that was put in," says Les.
The committee recommendation included a three part questionnaire, asking first if citizens wanted the name changed from Westside, if so, which of the five selected names they would choose:
- Ponderosa
- Four Seasons
- Okanagan Hills
- Lake Okanagan
- Westlake
The final question asked, given a choice between the two, which would you choose, Westbank or West Kelowna?
